Today we were working on our blogs and posting to each other’s blogs. I sent a comment to Kay’s blog. Cathie had noticed that you can be at the dashboard for your blog and click on comments to have it show you if you have any comments that are “Awaiting Moderation”. This way you wouldn’t have to wait for the emails. My comment showed up under “Awaiting Moderation” so we went to it. There is a button that allows the you to edit any comments that are sent to you before you accept it. I noticed that I had made some errors so we changed the wording and then accepted it. At first, I thought this was great because once it was published, I couldn’t go back to make changes. So I was happy to have Kay make the necessary changes for me and I was part of the whole editing process. Then it occurred to me that this could be scary too. You could send a comment to someone’s blog and they could completely change what you said. However, your name would still be attached to that comment! Without being an administrator on the blog, you couldn’t delete your “changed version” either. Just something to consider when you are leaving comments on blogs out there in the digital world.

OK, WC! people… What are the pros/cons of this edublogs feature??

I would be curious to know if this “editing” feature is with edublogs only. It is a useful tool to be able to edit student spelling/gramm/etc. errors before they go out on the world stage. With this in mind perhaps edublogs allows editing but other blogs do not. If indeed editing comments is a feature in all other blogs it seems to defeat the whole purpose for the free exchange of ideas and thoughts. Any suggestions of how we could we find out for sure?

I can see the educational benefits, but I think it is scary to think my words, thoughts and opinions can be changed, but still attached to my name.
Is there any way to find out if this goes for ALL blogs?

OK- so its an edublogs feature, right? Only edublog blogs let you do this. Pros: the administrator has total control over the content. Editing can be done for clarity, brevity, and accuracy. If the administrator makes a mistake, there’s opportunity for extended dialouge through additional comments. Cons: If the administrator makes a mistake, its still your name on the comment. To clarify, or rectify, you send ANOTHER comment. Does this mean that after you submit comments you need to follow up and see that the posted comment is as you wished?

I know on another blog site (other than edublogs) that the administrator can edit any posts, even those they didn’t write, that are put on the blog. Your name would still be on it though. They also have the option of deleting anything. However, on this blog site the administrator was not able to change any comments that are left.
