WilliamsonConnects! is a research and development project that includes faculty, students, parents, business and community members. The goal of the project is to share resources integrating our local community with the global community. The project group has been discussing the impact of global learning and the skills our changing society will demand of our students.

The mission statement for the district: To provide a learning community that inspires character, service, knowledge and wisdom. What are your thoughts on this statement?
This statement is such a great goal for us to reach for and meet, especially with all the influences that affect our students today. As teachers, we are role models for our students and we help “mold” them into productive, caring, intelligent, helpful individuals. It is not a job to take lightly.
We are helping to create the next generation of Americans – those who will be responsible for the world when we can no longer. If we do nothing but help our students cultivate their character, service to the community and others, become knowledgeable in the world around them, and gain wisdom from going through our three buildings, we have done our jobs.
In his book, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of the American Community, Robert Putnam wrote:
“For the first two-thirds of the twentieth century a powerful tide bore Americans into ever deeper engagement in the life of their communities, but a few decades ago–silently, without warning–that tide reversed and we were overtaken by a treacherous rip current. Without at first noting, we have been pulled apart from one another and from our communities over the last third of the century.” [Putnam 27]
From my perspective not only as an educator but also as a product of a mentoring community, there is no tragedy that can befall society greater than the deterioration of community. Conversely, there is nothing more honorable for a society to pursue than the building of community.
And so, from its very premise of providing a learning community, I celebrate our district’s mission. I applaud that we do not limit ourselves or our learning to the confines of buildings and faculty. WilliamsonConnects is but one example of how we bridge generations, professions, and education to tap into the wealth of experience that provides the best practices and ideas. Trough this building of bridges, we encourage the true spirit of a learning community and, by so doing, we enhance the yearning to advertise our best character, provide service for the general welfare, and share knowledge for the common good…and are these not the seeds of wisdom?
