Doing My Homework

Filed Under (Assignment) by wcgkuryla on 10-09-2008

I’m feeling kind of guilty for not posting sooner.  I just don’t think I’m the journaling type.  When I look back at my schooling, I remember dreading the classes where I had to keep a journal.  I always ended up making it up the day before it was due.  Though I like to write, I’d much rather tell someone something in person than write about it.

I’ve had a pretty eventful first 2 weeks.  I am settling into my extra duty…I have a period every other day devoted to “tech support”.  I spent that time this week trying to figure out a smartboard malfunction.  It turns out that if you are running a projector and a laptop through a power bar you need to have a heavy duty cord for the power bar or there will not be enough power.  The smartboard in question was writing gibberish.  I’d try to draw a straight, horizontal line and it would come out looking like a bunch of vertical lines.  It took me about an hour of trying to reset the hardware and the software before I read something in the documentation that made me think to plug the laptop and the projector directly into the wall socket.  That did the trick!!  Everything was working normally again.  All we had to do then was find a heavy duty power bar.  Marge and Jack are wonderful at finding things when you need them.

The other exciting tech-thing I did was learn about school tool gradebook.  I really like what I’ve seen so far.  Of course my peers have already come up with some situations that will be tricky to figure out…like extra credit, but overall I think this will be much less cumbersome than school master was.  I’ll be interested to see how people like it after they’ve been working with it for a while.

I completely agree with you about School Tool Grade Book, it is great so user friendly! I love that I can customize more aspects of this then we could with school master gradebook.

Alright…so my mathematical mind is not working – I’m interested to know how I can incorporate extra credit onto my quizzes. Did you have any luck with coming up with something like this?

This would require your school to consider moving itself to a course management system, but Moodle (it’s open-source), which we use at our university handles extra credit and weighting pretty well as part of its gradebook. It may be a sledgehammer solution to your extra credit dilemma, but if you’re at all considering looking to keep course/class materials/activites in a central place it might be something to consider.
