Twitter vs. Plurk

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by wcmlyons on 31-12-2008

Well, I did it.  I cancelled my Twitter account.  Sorry Jamie.  I haven’t used twitter in over a month because I just lost interest.  I had a hard time finding people who were interesting to follow.  When I posted something, no one ever responded.  So, through the suggestion of Lori, Emily and Carol I tried Plurk.  I was struck by how caring everyone was.  Someone says “Good morning” and 12 people say good morning back.  It is much more personal and interesting than my time on Twitter.  As far as the whole Karma thing goes, I get it.  It is just that little extra push you need to actually participate and not just be a bystander, which by instinct I would rather be.  As far as it being beneficial as a teacher, it definitely is.  I have found other teacher’s blogs to read and other articles and information I never would have heard of if it wasn’t for a networking tool like this.  Just like everything else in life, it is what you make it.  Happy New Year!  We all need a new start.

Don’t apologize to me! I’m just happy to see that you are using a social networking site and that your classroom will benefit from it!

The karma thing puts my Obsessive-compulsivness in full gear though!!! lol!!! I have gotten so much educational feedback through this networking site. I really enjoy it! Much better than twitter I must say!

OK, so I’ve slowed down a little with Twitter as far as posting goes, but continue to attract followers anyway. I have twice as many followers than I am following myself. I am ok with the level of intimacy on twitter. Its like when e-mail gets used without a salutation or closing signature. Are you offended by the expediency there?
I am constantly searching for other art educators, and new Tweeters are doing the same looking for me. Yesterday an art ed professor started following me and when I started to follow him he sent a direct message inviting me to join an on-line community of art educators dedicated to using new technology to enhance art ed in the classroom. How cool is that? Here is the link for site on ning:

    Hello ebrown!
I am not saying that twitter is a bad thing. It just wasn’t for me. I hit a road block. I was able to find other people, but many of them did not post very often, so I wasn’t really learning a lot. I am definitely not offended by the expediency of twitter. Plurk is a very caring community and it fits my personality much better. I actually enjoy myself and look forward to reading posts. I am very happy that you are enjoying your twitter experience.
